About the Position: You will function as Louisville District's technical expert in geological investigations and design, especially in the fields of foundation assessments, rock mechanics, and seismic evaluations. Act as an authoritative source of technical leadership and guidance in the theoretical and practical geological aspects of design for all projects and programs within the Louisville District. DUTIES: Perform planning, design and construction document quality verification reviews by evaluating and recommending changes pertaining to complex seismic design and foundation engineering applications. Ensure compliance with established criteria, sound engineering principles, standard practices, and existing building codes. Analyze functional and operational aspects to determine if proposed work is technically sound. Maintain awareness of current practices and latest advances in the fields of foundation assessment and engineering, dam safety, and rock mechanics. Recommend revisions in design or construction plans when necessary and due to geological conditions encountered during construction being different than the original design. Prepare complex geologic data for preliminary examinations and survey reports. Validate appropriateness to project, adequacy of design, and economical use of materials. Assure project funding, scheduling, and cost estimates for design features are appropriate and reasonable. Confer with geologists and engineers in other organizational units engaged in various aspects of engineering design and construction to resolve conflicts or delays. Perform field inspections of proposed or existing projects, and evaluate design during and after construction. Serve on USACE committees that have as their purpose the evaluation and updating of geological/seismic design criteria, or the advancement of knowledge in the field of geology. Respond to inquiries from other Districts, HQUSACE, other government agencies, and interested parties in regards to specific geological elements of current plans and specifications. Participate in public hearings, regional, and national level meetings. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Specialized experience: To qualify applicants must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-12. Specialized experience is defined as designing a variety of dams and levees and advising on soil and rock foundations, loadings on soil and rock foundations, retaining structures and embankment structures, or other experience directly related to the work of a Geologist. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction. Time in Grade Restriction: Must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-12 grade level (or equivalent). Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university with a major in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography; OR a combination of education and experience in course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Other Requirements: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Registration as a Professional Geologist is required.
