Project Description
Following successful deep geothermal drilling in Weardale and central Newcastle, the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability and Cluff Geothermal Ltd are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic geoscientist to undertake a 3-year full-time PhD project, commencing in September 2011. The aim of the project is to develop a generic conceptual hydrogeological model for the occurrence, and likely response to development, of naturally warm groundwaters in and near major faults in northern England.
Based at Newcastle University, under the supervision of Professor Paul Younger, the student will also spend up to two months each year pursuing their research in the London HQ and at the various field sites of Cluff Geothermal Ltd (UK and overseas). Supplementary supervision and scientific support will be provided by Durham University and the British Geological Survey, as part of the development of the UK National Centre for Geothermal Research.
Value of the Award of Eligibility
Depending on how you meet the NERC's eligibility criteria, you may be entitled to a full or a partial award. A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of 13,801 (2011/12). A partial award covers fees at the UK/EU rate only.
In addition to the funding provided by NERC, an additional 1,500 stipend for the first three years plus all fieldwork expenses will be provided by Cluff Geothermal Ltd.
Person Specification
A First Class or upper Second Class honours degree in geology or a related discipline, and/or a postgraduate degree in an applied geology subject. Good numeracy and computer skills would be an advantage
