Position Statement

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences seeks to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Geology with expertise in geological fields as applied to the mineral and mining industries. The School invites applicants with expertise in economic geology, or geosciences fields relevant to the minerals and mining industry. The post will complement strengths in economic and applied geology within the School, and will build on JCU's long tradition of excellence in economic geology research and teaching.

Duties and Accountabilities
The appointee will be required to:

Conduct research, maintain a high-profile publication output in scientific journals, and make regular contributions to scientific meetings;

Teach applied geology courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels including undergraduate economic geology courses and courses in the economic geology masters program;

•Assist in the operation of student field classes at 2nd and 3rd year levels;

•Supervise honours,

• MSc and PhD students;

Develop research projects and generate research funding focusing on the field of economic geology; Assist with building and promoting EGRU (Economic Geology Research Unit).

Key Selection Criteria

A PhD degree in a relevant 1. field in geology;

A proven independent research track record in economic geology or closely related field;

Knowledge of and connections with the exploration and mining industries;

Experience as a supervisor at MSc and PhD levels;

Job Functions

􀀀 The Mud Logger carries out or supervises the collection, the processing and description of cuttings samples, from the

planned lagged depths and intervals. The samples are examined for hydrocarbon shows and described according to

client specifications.

􀀀 The Mud Logger assists in core recovery and core description when required.

􀀀 The Mud Logger collects and enters the rig and well data. He is responsible for communicating any information that

helps maintain Primary Well Control and general well integrity during well site operations. This includes caving

monitoring, gas variation, cut mud, trip monitoring, and corresponding alarm settings, etc… He completes the volume

balance sheet when tripping and alert the data engineer of discrepancies.

􀀀 The Mud Logger executes the basic maintenance of sensors and gas equipment.

􀀀 The Mud Logger ensures the design of an accurate and comprehensive Master Log according to the client's format.

􀀀 He regularly updates all logs so that all information required to complete the Final Well Report is identified, monitored,

recorded, and available for its inclusion into the final report. He updates the End of Well Report section concerning the

sample collection, dispatch and litho logical description.
