Research Fellow, Geology, Norway

Department of Geosciences
PhD Research Fellow in Geology/Geophysics - OMNIS project - (ref. no. 2011/12137)

A position as Research fellow (PhD) is available at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo. The fellowship is for a period of 3 years, starting as soon as possible.

The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth - the atmosphere, the hydrosphere (including oceans, freshwater and glaciers), the earth's surface and its interior. The Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo comprises sections for Environmental Geology and Hydrology; Tectonics, Petrology and Geochemistry; Petroleum Geology and Geophysics; Meteorology and Oceanography, and Physical Geography. The Department is affiliated with four Centers of Excellence. The faculty consists of 40 professors and approximately 80 research fellows. For more information, see http://www.geo.uio.no.

Job Description

The position is connected to the project "Offshore Mid-Norway: Integrated Margin and Basin Studies (OMNIS)" funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) under the PETROMAKS programme. OMNIS is an interdisciplinary strategic research project aimed at understanding fundamental geological processes that led to the formation of sedimentary basins and the continental margin offshore mid-Norway. The new knowledge will be used to reduce hydrocarbon exploration risk in the challenging Norwegian Sea province. The project involves integrated geological, geophysical, numerical and analogue model studies. The focus is on five work packages defined in the project, encompassing northeast Atlantic plate tectonics, basin processes, breakup magmatism, geodynamic modeling, and integration.

The main topics to be addressed by the project are:

  • Basin formation and development as linked to plate dynamic and geodynamic processes
  • Basin architecture linked to deep crust and upper mantle structure
  • The effect of farfield and local compressional stresses on basin configuration, structuring, hydrocarbon trap generation and potential for hydrocarbon leakage
  • The effect of early Eocene magmantic sill emplacement on hydrocarbons generated in the Vøring and Møre basins.
  • The analyses and modelling of these themes demand integration of geological and geophysical data on various scales, utilizing all available reflection seismic data, potential field data and well data.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a masters degree in geology/geophysics or a related field. Preferably the candidate should document experience within one or more of the following disciplines/tasks:

  • Integrated analysis of geological and geophysical data
  • Plate tectonics and conjugate margin studies
  • Basin analysis – structure, stratigraphy and evolution
  • Modelling – numerical and/or analogue
  • Linking deep and shallow structures
  • Linking onshore and offshore geology

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Firstly, the applicants must have obtained undergraduate (Cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) and postgraduate (Cand.Scient., M.Sc., or Siv.ing., i.e. M.Sc. level) qualifications. This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate. Appointment to a research fellowship is conditional upon admission to the Faculty's research training programme. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission approved within three months.
