Kinross Kettle River Operations has mined and processed ores from eight separate deposits in four local production centers since 1990. The Buckhorn mine (gold skarn deposit) achieved commercial production in mid-2008. Through the end of 2011, cumulative mine production from Buckhorn is forecast to have delivered in excess of 620,000 contained-ounces, pushing cumulative mine production for the Kettle River operations above 2.1 million contained-ounces.
Kinross is dedicated to funding the types of strategic, aggressive exploration programs needed to replace reserves and extend the life of the Kettle River operations. The Buckhorn mine has been a flagship operation for the company, having served as a model for modern, responsible, low-impact mine development.
We're currently seeking a Senior Exploration Geologist to be based at Kettle River in Okanogan and Ferry Counties, Washington USA. In conjunction with a subordinate Exploration Geologist, you will focus on Buckhorn near-mine, Buckhorn property (20 sq.-mi.), or Kettle River region (including southern BC, Canada) environments.
Role Responsibilities
To oversee activities related to a system, program, or process in exploration geology:
Independently handles duties in exploration geology
Using advanced professional knowledge, acts as an advisor to management and staff on a variety of internal and / or external requests
Proposes new work approaches, methods, and policies to optimize performance and to ensure adherence to industry regulations and organizational standards
Contributes to the development of policies and practices related to exploration geologyMonitors costs related to exploration geology and implements approved recommendations for maximizing operational efficiencies
Assigns tasks to less experienced employees and provides mentorship and guidance on complex or escalated issues
Designs exploration programs and evaluates results;Undertakes field examinations of submittals and active exploration projects
Carries out technical functions (mapping, drill hole logging, etc.) when appropriateKeeps current on new developments in geology and other fields that might improve efficiency in developing, handling, and interpreting geologic data
Provides geological and resource modeling and resource estimationGenerates exploration targets
To analyze information and prepare technical documents to support decision making:
Prepares business cases regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders
Prepares technical reports and documentation to ensure compliance with industry and operational requirementsIntegrates and interprets data related to geologic mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical survey as well as RC and core drilling data
Assists in preparing budget requests and negotiating contracts for exploration and resource definition
To communicate information related to exploration geology and to mentor others:
Assists with training and skill development on technical issues
Provides information on operating standards, compliance requirements, and policies to key stakeholders
Recognized as an internal expert in exploration geology and troubleshoots unusual or complex issues
To lead project teams and internal task forces:
Leads project teams including establishing project plans and milestones, analyzing risks, developing budgets, and delegating work assignments; accountable for results
Supervises work including assigning project tasks, following up on deliverables, and ensuring overall project quality
Sets performance targets and measures and monitors overall performance of project teams
Acts as a communication linchpin with the team and models the organization's values
Desired Skills & Experience
Formal professional designation in appropriate area of exploration geology
BS or BA degree in Geology or a related science is required, and a graduate degree in a related field
Additional specialized education of up to 4 years
Ten years of gold exploration experience
Has a strong working knowledge of exploration techniques and a thorough understanding of drilling and assaying techniques
Proficient English language skills (both verbal and written)
Exploration experience within Cordillera of North America strongly desired
Experience with skarn and epithermal deposits desired
