Rio Tinto Iron Ore Expansion Projects (RTIOEP) is responsible for the capacity expansion undertaken by Rio Tinto Iron Ore in response to increased world-wide demand for iron ore. This Rio Tinto Iron Ore Expansion Project will work across Guinea, in mines, ports, rail and required infrastructure.

The role:

Reporting to the Manager Resource Geology based in Guinea, the Senior Geologist will be responsible for:
· Design and implement programs to assist in the understanding of the geology and physical properties of the iron ore mineralisation along the Simandou range. Duties include design, implementation and management of drilling programs assisting in understanding the controls on the spatial variability of the mineralisation at Simandou and becoming more predictive regarding that variability. Tools would include geophysics, material type classification, geotechnical logging, mineralogy and geochemistry,
· Managing a team of geoscientists and field assistants to deliver the programs, involving QA/QC of drill logging, geophysics, geochemical sampling, surveying, geological mapping
· Meeting productivity, quality and HSE targets and monitoring these through Lean
· Establishing contacts both within Rio Tinto and with contractors, universities and other research organisations to develop field and research programs
· Managing contractors under RTIOAL's contractor management system
· Developing programs in consultation with the Manager and other Senior Geologists to assist in increasing orebody knowledge, particularly using the tools of mineralogy, spectral analysis, geophysics, geochemistry and general petrophysics
· Ensuring the data is accurately recorded, validated and stored in the acQuire Database
· Ensuring that drillhole samples are collected consistently and are representative of the material drilled
· Become familiar with the geological setting at Simandou and genesis of the mineralisation at Simandou and contribute to preparation of the evaluation program and become a mentor to the more junior staff
· Establish a budget for areas of responsibility based on planned projects for the budget period
· Implement projects according to agreed schedule and expected outcomes
· Reporting on a weekly, monthly and project completion basis
· Remain abreast of technical developments to take advantage of new technology.

The role is based in Guinea and is on Fly In Fly Out basis.

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
· A degree in Geology
· Previous experience in contributing to development of evaluation programs and budgets
· Previous experience in managing multi-rig drilling programs and contractors
· An understanding of iron deposit genesis, structure, mineralogy, chemistry and metallurgy
· Familiarity with Mapinfo/ArcView and Vulcan would be well regarded, as would an understanding of geophysical applications to iron ore evaluation (airborne, surface and downhole)
· Previous management of large teams in an isolated environment and ability to work in a team environment in a remote location
· Ability to collect, evaluate and interpret geological data
· Ability to effectively communicate to all levels of the organisation through verbal and written reporting
· Previously having worked in Africa would be a distinct advantage
· Fluent English and Spoken French would be an advantage
